I tylko pamięć została
Po tej katyńskiej nocy...
Pamięć nie dała się zgładzić,
Nie chciała ulec przemocy.

HISTORY OF KATYN MASSACRE

In September 1939, during the attack of USSR on Poland, the Red Army captured Polish prisoners of war. Then, contrary to international conventions, they were devolved to  the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USRR), which placed them in a specially created system of NKWD camps for Polish prisoners of war. NKWD also arrested the officers of the State Police, KOP, and other uniformed formations (with privates and non-commissioned officers), military settlers, landowners, factory owners and officials.

1099053_49310473.jpg    By March 1940 various measures had been taken(individual interrogations of all the prisoners, movement and selection of those who were ready to cooperate). About 15 thousand people - the majority of Polish officers and policemen imprisoned in the USSR were gathered in three special camps: in Kozielsk, in Starobielsk and Ostaszkow.

On 2nd March 1940 Lawrientij Beria – boss of the NKWD - sent to Joseph Stalin's a secret memo, stating that the Polish prisoners of war (14 736 people - including 97% of Poles), and prisoners in prisons in western Belarus and Ukraine (18 632 people - including 57% of Poles) were declared enemies of the Soviet Union and did not show any sing of improving. He suggested that a prisoners should be shot the prisoners without previous trial, without presenting charges, without the decision to terminate the investigation and without indictment, and he also the commissioned to examine the issues and make decisions by "Three NKWD bosses" (Wsiewołod Mierkułow, Bogdan Kobułow, Leonid Basztakow). The note was endorsed by Stalin, Woroszylow, Molotow and Mikojan.1109484_10815913.jpg

On 5th March 1940 a secret decision based on Beria's memo was issued.

On 22th March 1940, Beria issued a secret order "to ease prison NKWD USRR and BSSR".

On 3th April  1940 the first transport of prisoners was sent from the camp in Kozielsk to be executed in Katyn.

The victims were buried in mass graves in Katyn, Miednoje, Piatichatki and Bykownia.
